The theme for this work was influenced by current events.  I hardly ever choose buildings as subject matter, and indeed, many times I got frustrated with the way this one was going and I tried to paint over it.  To my surprise, each time I did so I found that I was just adding to the original idea.  It was almost eerie.  So I decided that I shouldn’t fight against what was clearly meant to be and I finally finished it.

The images of the damaged buildings were painted from memories of my own experiences in Europe and from newer ones from t.v.  I feel that I achieved my objectives of offering an abstract  mosaic-like effect or design and doing a piece almost exclusively in turquoise.  I think that the viewer will recognize the lighter shades in the upper right corner as conveying a sense of hope.

This painting was selected to be part of the 15th Annual Best of West Virginia Juried Exhibition and was on display at the David L. Dickirson Fine Arts Gallery at Tamarack in Beckley, WV from June 30th through August 9th, 2023.
