the forest for the trees

the forest for the trees

acrylic on cradled wood panel

24″h x 24″w x 1.5″d

The title of this painting is appropriate for three reasons: It describes the work’s subject matter, why it was chosen, and how it is depicted. When I was gazing out the front window of my studio and trying to decide what to paint, I realized that I had never considered the scene that almost fills the expanse of the pane and that I had overlooked for many years – the wooded hillside across the road. And in keeping with the meaning of the old adage, this painting explores details and shows stylized impressions of parts of the budding hardwood and flowering trees I see in Spring rather than the forest as a whole.

Its companion piece, the trees for the forest, was painted later and offers a different perspective.

This painting was invited to Monongalia Art Center’s exhibition entitled “A Summer’s Dream” and was on display in Morgantown, WV from August 11 until September 1, 2023.
