First of all, for those who don’t know, a “holler” in the Appalachian vernacular is a narrow valley.  This painting is an abstract depiction of the hillside from a side window of my studio.  It is covered with vines, weeds, wildflowers, briars, and trees of every description.  I have tortured myself trying to make it grow flowers and vegetables, but the wild things from above eventually take over again, and so it refuses to be tamed.   I suppose this painting is my begrudging tribute to it.

This painting was invited to be part of Monongalia Art Center’s “A Summer’s Dream” exhibition in August of 2023.
